Univest Grand Prix Sets New Pace for Social Networking in 2009 Race

Twitter Reports To Be Issued from Finish Line and On The Race Course

Souderton, Pa -- The Univest Grand Prix UCI stage race is setting a new pace in social networking this year through its Facebook fan page and expanded Twitter reports available both before the Sept. 11-13 race weekend and during the races in Allentown, Souderton and Doylestown.

“We are really excited to offer this opportunity for our fans to follow the races wherever they are,” said race organizer John Eustice. “Twitter is a terrific tool for reaching out to our fans to get them excited, keep them abreast of the race as it happens and to put them not just at the finish line, but in the field where the action is happening.”

The Univest Grand Prix this year is a UCI 2.2 stage race that includes a new team time trial on Friday, Sept. 11 in Allentown and the classic and very challenging road race on Saturday, Sept. 12 in Souderton. The weekend cycling festival wraps up Sunday, Sept. 13 with the Univest Grand Prix Doylestown Criterium.

WFMZ Channel 69 will broadcast the Allentown and Souderton races live from start to finish and NBC affiliate Universal Sports will also broadcast the races live to a national and international audience via cable and webcasts. Comcast SportsNet will also provide regional coverage. The Allentown and Souderton races will feature a jumbo television at the finish line to allow spectators to follow the action throughout the course.

The Univest Grand Prix already has a Facebook fan page and race organizers have been tweeting for several months to promote North America s most challenging and exciting stage race. Race fans can start following the action beginning today at www.twitter.com/UnivestGP.

Kim Detwiler, vice president and director of Corporate Communications for Univest Corporation, said, “Our Twitter account continues to gain followers as we tweet Univest Grand prix planning developments and highlights from other rides and cycling events throughout the region.”

Univest is also giving away two tickets to the VIP for the Allentown team time trial to selected participants who re-tweet a message about the race. More details can be found here at the Univest Grand Prix website.

“On race weekend Univest employees will be tweeting about the community festivals and events at each race while we follow the action from Allentown to Souderton to Doylestown,” said Univest Grand Prix marketing consultant Dan Lavelle.

“By using Twitter we create a comprehensive package of information for our fans,” Lavelle said. It complements everything that is being done through current outreach and what will be done with the live television provided by WFMZ and Universal Sports.

“Because the rapid growth in Twitter usage is a fairly recent phenomenon, it allows Univest Grand Prix organizers to take maximum advantage of it to reach out to race fans throughout the world,” said Eustice.

“The timing is fantastic because Twitter really is at its peak right now,” he added.
