Univest Grand Prix Seeks Course Marshals, Event Volunteers

Opportunities Abound To Get Involved in Major International Cycling Event

Souderton, Pa. - The Univest Grand Prix is seeking volunteers to serve as course marshals and event staff for North America’s most prestigious Pro-Am cycling event to be held Saturday, Sept. 11 in Souderton and Sunday, Sept. 12 in Doylestown.

Course marshal volunteers will assist police and fire police in crowd and traffic control along the dynamic new 5.8 Univest Grand Prix course in Souderton, Telford and Franconia on Saturday and on the 1.4 mile race course around the perimeter of the annual Arts Festival in Doylestown on Sunday. Event staff volunteers are needed to assist with the Cyclosportif recreational ride on Saturday morning in Souderton, banner set-up and tear-down before and after the races and registration assistance at race-related activities on both days.

”The major strength of the Univest Grand Prix has always been the deep community support for the event,“ said race organizer John Eustice, president of Sparta Cycling Inc. ”The new course for the Souderton race and Cyclosportif ride will provide a front-line view of a great international bike race, the chance to interact with fans and the opportunity to be part of the wonderful team that makes this race possible every year.“

Course marshals will be asked to serve from approximately 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. for the race on Saturday to keep the course clear of vehicles, pedestrians, spectators and debris and serve as ambassadors to the fans gathered along the course. Course captains will be responsible five to 10 intersections and marshals on race day to ensure appropriate coverage and communications. Food, drinks, event shirts and breaks from duty will be provided to volunteers.

Sunday’s course marshals and captains are asked to serve from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

Course marshals and volunteers are also needed from 8 to 10 a.m. to assist with the Cyclosportif -- a fund raiser that benefits the Penn Foundation in Sellersville. Volunteers will serve in the Feed Zone for the Cyclosportif along the 3.8 mile Finishing Loop in Souderton to help riders refill water bottles and provide food to help them finish the ride. Opportunities are also available for volunteers at the Hospitality Tents in Souderton and Doylestown and other volunteer opportunities are available on both days.

This is an ideal opportunity for service groups, youth organizations, church congregations and others to attain volunteer hours while ensuring the success of a great community tradition.

Best of all, it’s fun!

”I love to get the rush of adrenalin as the Univest Grand Prix bikers come by me, wherever my post is that day, and the bikers and cars who follow them give me a huge thumbs up for showing them the correct direction to go,“ said Emilie Lauchmen of Harleysville, who has been serving as a course marshal since 2004. ”I would definitely recommend volunteering for the Univest Grand Prix. Just being a small part of such a big event is rewarding.“
