Univest Grand Prix Cyclists To Visit Elementary Schools In Harleysville, Doylestown

Friday Visits By Swedish, Canadian Teams Continue Race Outreach Tradition

Souderton, Pa. -- Cyclists from two international teams competing this weekend in the Univest Grand Prix will continue a race tradition by participating in assemblies for local school students to introduce children in the community to a life-long sport that can help them get into shape and enjoy a healthy lifestyle on Friday, Sept. 16.

The media is invited to cover the events, talk to team members, students, teachers and school administrators as the students:

  • Gain an understanding of the commitment and dedication the cyclists make to compete professionally.
  • Learn about the healthy diets of the cyclists and how nutrition plays a critical role in a cycling competition.
  • Understand the competitive cycling sport - team strategies, difference between a road race (Saturday’s event) and a criterium (Sunday’s event).
  • Learn about bike safety - the importance of wearing a helmet - and also about the professional cycling bikes and how they differ from the children’s bicycles.
  • Learn about other countries and cultures through the eyes of a cyclist.

Riders from Team Cykelcity - which swept both the Univest Grand Prix and the Univest Criterium of Doylestown in 2010 - will visit Oak Ridge Elementary School at 2 to 3 p.m. to meet with students from grades K-5. Oak Ridge is located at 465 Moyer Rd., Harleysville.
