FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE -- November 23, 2010

Univest Grand Prix Moves to September 17 and 18, 2011

Race is Awarded Top Ranking on the USA Cycling National Racing Calendar

New York, NY, November 23, 2010 – The 14th edition of the Univest Grand Prix will move to the third weekend in September, one week later than its traditional date. The change was mandated by the Swiss-based UCI (International Cycling Union), the world sanctioning body for cycling. The Univest Grand Prix is one of only seven UCI sanctioned races in the United States and is the closing event of the UCI America Tour which encompasses the best races in North, Central and South America.

USA Cycling, the national governing body of the sport, has in turn brought the Univest Grand Prix into their USA Cycling National Racing Calendar (NRC), a season-long points competition featuring the 30 top races in the United States. The Univest Grand Prix, along with New York’s Tour of the Battenkill, will receive a 1.HC (Hors Categorie or “beyond categorization”, a French term used in cycling to describe the most difficult mountains or races) NRC ranking, the highest points classification possible in American racing.

“The Univest Grand Prix has always focused on being the top Pro-Am race in North America,” said race director John Eustice, “Our inclusion in the premier position on the NRC, to complement our UCI status, is a strong and logical move on the part of USA Cycling.”

Eustice also noted that the Doylestown Arts Festival, which has been a long-time partner in the Univest Criterium of Doylestown, the popular Sunday event that follows the UCI and (now) NRC road race in Souderton, PA, is in discussions with the event organizers on the date change.

From its inception, the Univest Grand Prix has united the towns throughout Bucks and Montgomery counties for a weekend of community celebration while offering a unique showcase for the best young talent in cycling.
