Germany's Christian Lademann Holds Off Munoz, McCormack and Friedman to Win the Doylestown Criterium
Floyd Landis breaks down a crit

DOYLESTOWN, Pa. (September 10, 2006) -- Former national team pursuit champion, Christian Lademann (Sparkasse-Etta Maes Antiques), joined an early break with a group of so-called "big fellas" that included "The Businessman" Mark McCormack (Colavita-Sutter), Fausto Munoz (Tecos), and 2005 Doylestown Crit winner, Mike Friedman (TIAA-CREF). The break, which occurred roughly six laps into the 55-lap race, faltered at first as the group sorted out strategies on how to stay in front.

"We didn't really work together in the beginning," said Lademann, "we dropped somebody off who wasn't really involved in the sprints but it's better to have a bigger breakaway in the beginning because the teams back in the peloton are happy to have somebody ahead."

Lademann sustained a pace that forced the others to ride their own race rather than relying on support from their respective teams.

"Friedman and McCormack really want to go into the peloton where they would have support for the sprints and I was like 'Please don't!' because then I would have never made it."

Lademann, who withdrew after 60 miles in yesterday's race, felt confident and energized coming into today's crit.

"It was a hard day yesterday, you saw everybody really tired and you had to do yesterday's race to enter today's race. I kept some energy from yesterday, I really pushed it to win today and I did."

Floyd Landis, who grew up in nearby Lancaster County, was in the neighborhood and dropped by for a visit. Landis, who has never won a crit, detailed some of the tricky bits to racing a criterium.

"It's different than a road race because there's always those small circuits so there are a lot of turns and a lot of hard sprints out of those turns," said Landis. "So each time you take a corner you have to sprint and after two hours, it kind of wears on you. Ordinarily there's a sprint at the end with the whole field but occasionally a breakaway like this one will stay away until the end and it's a small group of people or one person who will win. Generally the speed stays high in the pack when there's a small breakaway because otherwise the breakaway gets a chance to lap the field and once they've lapped it, it's almost impossible to get rid of them again so they're guaranteed to win."

For the second day Mexican racer, Fausto Munoz, managed to get caught up in a crash but then managed to advance strong and fast enough to put him in second place two days in a row. A somewhat self-effacing Munoz acknowledged the pedigree of his competitors but took credit for his own prowess as well.

"I know that there are sprinters better than me," said Munoz. "I used to do tours, I climb well and sprint but not good enough like these guys. I'm glad to be on the podium and maybe race here again."

Race report and results are available at www.univestgrandprix.com For a selection of images from the Third Annual Doylestown Criterium, visit jsmcelvery.com, images will be online starting Monday night, Sept. 11. A full broadcast of both the Univest Grand Prix and the Doylestown Crit, produced by WNPV, is coming soon to www.univestgrandprix.com.

Shawn Milne Outsprints Munoz to Win the Univest Grand Prix
Nowhere to Hide on Univest's Tough, Torturous Course

SOUDERTON, Pa. (September 9, 2006) -- Tucked into the plush folds of Eastern Pennsylvania, the Ninth Annual Univest Grand Prix unleashed 162 racers each clawing to scratch out a win in the bike race's first edition as a professional event. Pro teams from Mexico, Germany, Poland, and Canada along with 19 domestic teams bore down on Souderton with an intensity otherwise found in the "European Spring Classics." Formerly a breeding ground for the pro ranks, the new Univest Grand Prix debuted a pro field studded with current and future national champions. Today it was 25-year-old Shawn Milne (Navigators) who forced an about-face performance to clinch the win.

"The race broke down late for me because I felt terrible the whole race until about seven (laps) to go and then just felt better and better," explained Milne. "By then there were just groups along the whole road, everyone was exhausted and I just felt good enough to jump to one group, rest a bit, and then jump to another one. Myself and the Tecos guy got away and we worked well together."

Second place Fausto Munoz (Tecos) suffered a feedzone crash and then succeeded in working his way back to the front. With six laps to go, Munoz and Milne each fought hard to stuff the other behind him, which brought the battle for first and second place down to a finishing sprint.

Escalating speeds set crowds on "stun" through sprint zones in the towns of Lansdale, Harleysville, and Saltfordville and even brought one overwhelmed fan to tears when Chad Hartley (TIAA-CREF) snapped up points at the first sprint in Lansdale.

"About 2k out I was sitting behind Mike Creed and we were looking to sprint for it," explained Hartley. "A couple attacks started to go and I got swamped in the back; I was sitting maybe 30 or 40 guys back at 1k to go. I was kind of out of it and I just started going up the side. I caught the guys at the front; there was a moment of hesitation and I had all that momentum so I just blew by everybody before they started."

The 107-mile race dispatched racers from the Start/Finish in Souderton for a 68-mile muscle-searing ride through the hills and country roads surrounding Souderton. Pain and suffering paid a visit when steepness grades reached up to 20 percent on the course's three KOM climbs.

"We didn't worry about the KOM's," said Milne, "we worried about staying at the front and making it over the climbs with the least amount of effort. We knew the race would shatter at the end and we wanted to play it out for whomever felt the best."

Shawn Milne became $3,000 wealthier for his win today with second and third place earning $2,200 and $1,400 respectively. Prizes were awarded to the top 30 finishers (Full Results).

Racing continues tomorrow at 11 a.m. with the 3rd Annual Doylestown Criterium. 2004 winner, Chad Hartley, and 2005 winner, Mike Friedman, now ride for the same team and each knows how to win the race. Look for the TIAA-CREF team to repeat the past successes of Hartley and Friedman. Check back at www.univestgrandprix.com for report and results.

INTERNATIONAL FIELD OF TEAMS ANNOUNCED FOR 2006 UNIVEST GRAND PRIX
North America's Pro Classic to Feature Field of 28 Top Professional and Elite Teams

Souderton, Pa., August 30, 2006 - Growing from its international success in 2005, Sparta Cycling, Inc., one of America's premier bicycle race promoters, today announced that it has confirmed 28 international and domestic professional and elite cycling teams for the ninth annual Univest Grand Prix (UCI 1.2). Second and third, respectively, in the USA Cycling National Race Calendar standings, Navigators Insurance Company (NIC) and Toyota-United Pro (TUP) will lead a field of unprecedented quality along with Team TIAA-CREF (TIA), recent winners of the USPRO National Criterium Championships. The Grand Prix, North America's Pro Classic is one of only six internationally sanctioned competitions on the UCI America Tour and is scheduled for September 9-10, 2006.

"The field for the 2006 Univest Grand Prix builds on the foundation laid in the eight previous editions of the race and cements its reputation as the top event of its kind in North America," said John Eustice, president of Sparta Cycling, Inc. and promoter of the Univest Grand Prix. "Over time, we have built this event from the top developmental races in the United States to an event that hosts some of the top teams in the world. Our status this year as the only professional "Classics" style race on the North American calendar is a natural evolution for an event that has deep roots in the cycling community."

The penultimate race on the United States National Race Calendar for 2006, this year's Univest Grand Prix is primed to feature the best of America's professional class racing in front of thousands on WFMZ's live television broadcast and on the web at www.wfmz.com. Navigators Insurance and Toyota-United Pro will come to Univest with an eye to valuable NRC points. Expect sprinters who can also climb to excel on the famed Univest Grand Prix course.

Russian Vassili Davidenko (NIC), now a resident of Mt. Arlington in New Jersey, will face tough challengers' Argentinian sprinter Juan-Jose Haedo (TUP) and his teammate Ivan Dominguez. New Jersey based Colavita Olive Oil Professional Cycling Team will also be sending a powerful team featuring former USPRO Champion Mark McCormack and Italian Davide Frattini. Strong international professional squads from Mexico, Germany, Poland and Canada will look to take advantage of the in-fighting between the U.S. teams and take the win in Souderton on Saturday and the lion's share of the $20,000 prize list. Last year's second-place finisher Amos Brumble, an Elite with CCB-Volkswagon, will return to the roads of Montgomery and Bucks counties to challenge the professional class of riders.

Sunday's Univest Grand Prix of Doylestown Criterium will feature the sprinters. Team TIAA-CREF will arrive in Doylestown with the past two winners of the 50-lap circuit race, Chad Hartley (2004) and Mike Friedman (2005). They will be looking to capitalize on their recent strong showing at the USPRO National Criterium Championships. As average speeds exceed 30 miles-per-hour, expect Haedo, Oleg Griskine (NIC) and former US Criterium Champion Frank Pipp of TargeTraining to also figure prominently in the flat, fast race.

For more information on the Univest Grand Prix, please visit www.univestgrandprix.com. The 2006 Univest Grand Prix will be broadcast live from 12:00-3:00 p.m. on WFMZ and www.wfmz.com. Individual rider profiles available upon request.

Former Tour de France Rider Also To Be Commentator for LIVE Broadcast of Univest Grand Prix on 69 WFMZ-TV

Souderton, Pa., August 29, 2006 - Sparta Cycling, Inc. and Univest Corporation today announced that nine-time Tour de France rider and former member of the US Postal Service Professional Cycling Team Frankie Andreu will lead the Univest Cyclosportif 100k presented by Bicycling Magazine. Andreu, who retired from professional cycling in 2000 after a 12-year career in Europe, is now a sports journalist and television commentator. He will also be announcing the live television broadcast of the Univest Grand Prix on 69 WFMZ-TV.

A recreational ride to benefit the Indian Creek Foundation for the developmentally disabled, the Cyclosportif will take place on the famed Univest Grand Prix race-course. Leaving from the start/finish line in Souderton at 8 a.m. on Saturday, September 9, Andreu will lead the 'Cyclos" on a true European-style ride through southeastern Pennsylvania. Andreu continues this tradition in 2006, following fellow American cycling champions Jonathan Vaughters, Floyd Landis, and Marty Nothstein, all of whom have led the Cyclosportif in years past.

"The Cyclosportif is a great European cycling tradition, one that I've witnessed many times in my career as a pro in Europe," said Andreu. "I'm excited to lead the ride and see how the course compares to those that I raced in Europe, while meeting hundreds of Pennsylvania's cycling enthusiasts and giving back to the community."

In addition to his insight in the sport gleaned from years as a racer and team manager, Andreu's experience as a television commentator will be showcased on the first-ever live television broadcast of the Univest Grand Prix. The broadcast will be live on 69 WFMZ-TV from 12:00 noon until 3:00 p.m.

Spectators in Souderton on race day will be able to follow the action from start to finish on a giant screen television that will be visible from the downtown area. A world-wide audience will also be able to follow the action at www.wfmz.com from 10:30 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.

"I'm thrilled that Frankie is joining us this year as both Cyclosportif ride leader and as the voice of the Univest Grand Prix," said John Eustice, president of Sparta Cycling, Inc. and promoter of the Univest Grand Prix. "Frankie is one of the finest bike racers America has ever produced and his participation in the event this year continues the race's tradition of honoring America's established cycling stars while showcasing the future champions of the sport."

Bicycling magazine has joined the Univest Cyclosportif 100K as title sponsor for 2006. The Valley Forge Convention and Visitors Bureau will also support this year's ride. Souderton, Pa., August 22, 2006 - Univest Corporation and Sparta Cycling, Inc. today announced an expanded schedule of public events to coincide with the Univest Grand Prix professional bicycle race (UCI 1.2). Additionally, the weekend will focus on benefiting area youth and introducing them to cycling through the host family and school visits program and kid's races in both Souderton and, new for 2006, Lansdale, Pa.

As part of their ongoing commitment to maintaining an active role in the people they serve, Univest Corporation has enhanced the annual Community Festival. Race fans will be able to sample local business services and learn more about local not-for-profit and charitable organizations by visiting Univest Plaza on race day.

"The Community Festival is a great way for us to give back to the communities that we serve," said said William S. Aichele, chairman, president and CEO of Univest Corporation, title sponsor of the Univest Grand Prix. "By giving local businesses an opportunity to interact with residents and visitors, we hope to strengthen our community by helping to grow local business, raise awareness for charitable organizations and ensure that we have a lasting and significant impact on our area."

Not-for-profit organizations that will be present at the festival include, but are not limited to: Souderton/Telford Main Streets, Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, Indian Valley YMCA, among others.

The festival will once again be highlighted by children's activities. Alongside the Children's Sprints on Main Street in Souderton and in Lansdale Borough, both venues will have a full complement of kids' activities. In Souderton, children will be able to enjoy a Moon Bounce, Basketball Toss, the WFMZ Children's TV Set and a 90 minute Disney Radio Show. Children in Lansdale will enjoy face-painting, balloons, bike-safety lessons and a live D.J.

"The focus on children highlights the Univest Grand Prix's longstanding tradition of developing young people into both the next generation of cycling champions and exemplary citizens," said John Eustice, president of Sparta Cycling and promoter of the Univest Grand Prix. "I'm proud to work with Univest to once again offering area kids a fun, interactive environment while introducing them to the beautiful sport of cycling."

The athletes competing in the Univest Grand Prix engage with area residents in the week prior to the event. Since its inception, cyclists coming to town have had the opportunity to stay with local host families. Many of the cyclists also give back to their hiots while they are here by visiting local schools. On Friday, September 8, the athletes visit local schools to teach youth about bike safety and the benefits of living a healthy lifestyle.

"By hosting athletes, local families get to experience the life of a professional athlete and become part of the athlete's success at the Univest Grand Prix," stated Eustice. "They become true fans of the sport, are exposed to new cultures and become a real, active part of the success of the race."

Hosted by nine-time Tour de France competitor Frankie Andreu and cycling journalist Richard Fries, the live broadcast on WFMZ-69 will begin at 12:00 noon with live action on the race course until the finish around 2:45 p.m. Spectators in Souderton race day will be able to follow the action from start to finish on an elevated giant screen television that will be visible from the downtown area. A world-wide audience will also be able to tune in for the action at www.wfmz.com.

"Live television is the essence of sport in the modern world," said race promoter and president of Sparta Cycling Inc., John Eustice. "In today's fast moving media environment, fans want to see the action as it happens - they don't want to wait."

The international field of professional teams - with teams scheduled to come from Germany, Canada, Poland, and Mexico in addition to teams from America's professional class - will compete on the challenging course that covers 107-miles and 18 municipalities throughout Montgomery and Bucks counties. On Sunday, the riders will compete in a 50-mile, .9-mile circuit in the heart of Doylestown.

"The expanded race course allows us to include new communities and expose more children to the sport," explained Eustice. "For the professional racers, the new addition - which comes at the beginning of the race - will allow the pros to 'stretch their legs' before attacking the hills, twists and turns that have made this such a renowned race-course."

The enhanced racing program will be complemented by a broad menu of community events and activities. The popular Cyclosportif 100K recreational ride will return in 2006.

This year's ride will be sponsored by Bicycling Magazine and Valley Forge Convention and Visitors Bureau. The Cyclosportif will once again benefit Indian Creek Foundation.

During the professional race on Saturday, spectators in Souderton can enjoy a Community Festival from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. in Univest Plaza and children's sprints sponsored by Byers' Choice at the Start/Finish line. Also new for 2006 is a high school race on Main Street Souderton between Summit and Broad streets. Spectators in Lansdale will be treated to children's sprints on Main Street at 10:00 a.m., and a community festival in the municipal lot adjacent to the Boys and Girls Club, prior to the arrival of the race.

"We're looking forward to welcoming our first full professional class of riders to the Univest Grand Prix, hosting a variety of family activities and bringing this world-class event into new communities in our region, our nation and abroad," said William S. Aichele, chairman, president and CEO of Univest Corporation, the title sponsor of the event. "This multi-faceted festival is a shining example of the very best of community cooperation, volunteerism and civic mindedness. The cooperation shown for the event clearly demonstrates our commitment - and that of our neighbors - to building stronger, more vibrant communities."

The community events continue on Sunday in Doylestown with the introduction of children's races at 10:30 a.m., followed by the start of the professional race at 11:00 a.m. For the third consecutive year, the Univest Grand Prix Doylestown Criterium will be held in conjunction with the Doylestown Arts Festival. Together, both events attract more than 30,000 spectators.

UNIVEST GRAND PRIX ANNOUNCES NEW DATE FOR 2006

North America’s Pro Classic Moves to September 9-10

Final Stop on UCI America Tour

NEW YORK, NY – Sparta Cycling, Inc., has announced that the Univest Grand Prix, a 100-mile cycling road race designed along the lines of the great classic races of Europe, will return to Souderton, Penna., on September 9, 2006. The follow up Univest Criterium of Doylestown will be held on Sunday, September 10th.. For the ninth consecutive year, Univest Corporation will retain title sponsorship of the race. The Univest Cyclosportif 100k – a 62-mile timed recreational ride held on the challenging pro race course – will once again highlight the weekend of community activities and benefit the Indian Creek Foundation for the Developmentally Disabled.

Moving up a week from its traditional date on the National Race Calendar, USA Cycling has chosen the Pennsylvania race weekend to fill the spot left vacant by the San Francisco Grand Prix. One of only six UCI- (or internationally) sanctioned races in the United States, the Univest has completed its transformation from amateur race to the final stop on the 2006 professional UCI American Tour, which includes the best races in North, Central and South America.

“After the success of last year’s race, we’re delighted that Univest Corporation has increased their commitment to bringing one of the most anticipated events on the North American cycling calendar back to the communities of Montgomery and Bucks counties,” said John Eustice, president, Sparta Cycling, Inc. “The Univest weekend continues to be one of the crown jewels in North American cycling. We’re confident that the new date will enhance the already established reputation of the Souderton road race as the defining one day classic of the U.S. while also showcasing the popularity of the Doylestown criterium.”

Although the 2006 edition will become in essence a professional race, a few select amateur teams will participate. The Univest will retain its unique focus on developing developing amateurs and young professionals by placing particular emphasis on the Best Young Rider competition. Youth development will remain an important part of the weekend’s activities, with riders visiting schools to help teach students about the importance of living a healthy lifestyle and bike safety. Children’s sprint competitions in both Souderton and Doylestown will be a highlight of the weekend.

A cornerstone of the weekend’s community-based charity activities, the Cyclosportif 100k will also benefit from the new date. Participation in the “Cyclo”, is expected to increase as the ride no longer conflicts with the MS150 ride from Philadelphia to Atlantic City. More details on the 2006 event, including an expanded race route, will follow in the coming months. For a review of the 2005 race weekend, please visit www.univestgrandprix.com

UNIVEST GRAND PRIX: A BRIEF HISTORY

In 1997, Univest Corporation was looking to host a major event for their community. It wanted to bring residents out of their homes and unite surrounding towns. After several months of thinking about how to best reach out to their community, Univest decided that it wanted to bring a cycling event to the hometown of its main branch in Souderton, PA. Univest was referred to John Eustice, president of Sparta Cycling and two-time U.S. professional champion, to help bring this race to life.

Eustice designed the Univest Grand Prix to aid in the development of America's future cycling stars. Towards that end, Eustice created a very European-style event. The course is extremely challenging, with over 6,000 feet of uphill climbs. The original 100-mile course consisted of 60-miles through hilly countryside and 40-miles of challenging circuit. In addition to the difficult course, the presence of elite amateur teams from Belgium, France, Holland, and Spain in the years from 1998 to 2005 elevated the competition. The International riders were flown in specifically for the Univest Grand Prix in order to test the U.S. riders and heighten the competition. The result has been some of the best racing ever seen in North America.

In 2004, we added a Men's circuit race on Sunday in Doylestown, bringing the Univest Grand Prix to Bucks County. We have also increased our focus on the Cyclosportif ride to benefit Indian Creek Foundation as well as many family activities occurring on Saturday in Souderton.

2006 is a year of significant growth for the UGP. The course has been expanded to south to Lansdale, PA, adding 7-miles to the already difficult parcours. And this year, for the first time, the race will focus on featuring the American professional class of racers - including many former amateurs who have excelled at the Grand Prix in past years - as well as international professional and elite teams. America's Pro Classic is one of six UCI races on the UCI Americas Calendar. Matching its status as one of America's premiere bike races is the introduction of live TV. WFMZ will be providing live television from 12:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. The broadcast, announced by Frankie Andreu, will be simulcast on the web for international viewers at www.wfmz.com and at the Start/Finish line on big screen TVs for spectators.
